FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Not Your Child – The most customizable GPS device on the market New wearable GPS device gives children the independence they need, and parents the peace of mind they deserve. TORONTO, CANADA (August, 2015) – In 2013 there were 462,567 entries of missing children under the age of 18 into the FBI’s National Crime Information Center (NCIC). That means that 1200 times each day, parents or care givers felt a child’s disappearance was serious enough to warrant calling in law enforcement officials. Additionally, 14,500 of the children reported missing were categorized as either endangered or involuntary.

With frightening statistics such as these played out in heart wrenching stories viewed daily on the news reports we watch and in articles we read, it’s not surprising that the protective child rearing trend known as ‘helicopter parenting’ is on the rise. Some studies estimate that up to 60% of parents today fall into the helicopter parenting category, demonstrating traits including problem solving on behalf of their child, over-scheduling their child and micromanaging all daily activities from self care to social interactions.

While parents want to be responsible and their children’s safety should rightly be their main concern, this extreme level of hyper-vigilance has been shown to have significant negative and long lasting effects on the children involved. A recent study out of Brigham Young University revealed a decrease in self-worth and increase in high-risk behaviours in the young-adult children of helicopter parents. “Overall, stepping in and doing for a child what the child developmentally should be doing for him or herself, is negative,” the researchers found.

A separate study from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga indicated that children of perceived helicopter parents are more often medicated for anxiety and/or depression. They are also more likely to take pain pills without a prescription. Overall, helicopter parenting has been shown to impede with the child’s ability to develop the coping strategies and problem solving skills needed to face and resolve challenges on their own.

The question then is, how do well meaning parents allow their children the independence they need developmentally, while continuing to ensure their safety?

The Not Your Child GPS device provides parents with the tools to do just that. Unlike any other device on the market, Not Your Child is fully customizable, with settings including unlimited geofences surrounding commonly traveled areas, location updates on demand or on a set schedule, breadcrumb map history, and multiple user options. It’s also comes with a wide array of extra features such as speed and inactivity alerts, and fall down detection.

Not Your Child’s wearable design allows for comfortable use in any situation with the included arm band and belt clip, and the combination of it’s US Military shock & vibration + waterproof standards, and replaceable battery mean that you can rely on its durability to continue to function under any conditions. Its multiple communication technologies; internal GPS Antenna and GSM Antenna, plus internal SIM Card mean that you can trust that your data and alerts are never dropped. The Not Your Child platform is both web and app based, so data is accessible anywhere and notifications can be received via email, SMS, or push notifications on iOS, Android and BlackBerry devices.

Not Your Child Corp. aims to help children everywhere live happier, healthier, more carefree and independent lives while providing the tools and information to offer parents the peace of mind they deserve. Founder Julia Matthews knows first hand how important this is after a frightening experience with her nephew when he was just 7 years old.

“My nephew and I were at a local mall and I let go of his hand to adjust my bags. When I turned my head, he was gone. The sinking feeling in my stomach of intense fear and panic planted me, in the middle of the mall, in a state of shock. Two minutes warped into what felt like a lifetime.

Luckily I had the presence of mind to run into the toy store that was to my left and found him there.

In less than a second, I adjusted the bags in my hands and I lost the present moment. In that one moment a lifetime of fear and anticipated regret paralyzed me so completely I am sure I was not breathing.

On the way home I looked at my iPhone and saw the “Find Your iPhone App” I thought to myself ‘We have these technologies for inanimate objects, why not for our children?’ We carry our phones in our hands and in our bags – some will argue that it is easier to take a child than steal a phone. How long does it take to lose a child? How long does it take for a child to be abducted?

It is my belief we must find ways to use technology in the intelligence of safeguarding and protecting our children. This is why Not Your Child Corp was born.”
